Spirit of Enniskillen Trust

The Remembrance Day bombing took place on 8 November 1987 in Enniskillen. Twelve people died and many more were injured as a result of the bomb. It could have provoked a response of anger and revenge; instead what emerged was an atmosphere of forgiveness and reconciliation in the true Spirit of Enniskillen.

In a deeply divided society, the Trust pays tribute to this through working to encourage dialogue and greater understanding between all social, cultural and religious traditions.

One of the dead, Marie Wilson, was the daughter of Gordon Wilson. Gordon went on to become a member of the Seanad Éireann and the Patron of the Spirit of Enniskillen Trust.

This soundtrack of Gordon Wilson is following the 1987 Enniskillen bombing and the death of his daughter Marie. These comments were reported by the BBC immediately after the bombing with a deep political impact in Ireland and abroad.

In 1989 The Spirit of Enniskillen Trust international programme for young people began as a consequence of this debate.
