Why don’t I have an Internet connection?

If your internet connection is completely cut off, this is probably one of these two scenarios:

  1. CenturyLink Internet is down in your area. You can check here if CenturyLink Internet is down in your area. If it’s down, there’s not much you can do except wait for CenturyLink to turn everything on.
  2. There is a problem with your modem. Let’s see how you can repair your CenturyLink modem.

How to repair your CenturyLink modem

First, go get your modem. It should look like one of the two modems below:

There are a bunch of flashing lights that probably look intimidating at first glance. The first thing we want to check is whether your modem has power or not. On the far left of the box, you’ll see the power light. It will look something like this:

We want to see a green power light, but your power light can be red, amber, or completely off.

Red or amber light

You will see a red or amber power light when the modem tests its own hardware. Hopefully the light will stay red for about 30 seconds and then turn green. If it stays red, here are some possible reasons:

  • You are using the wrong power cord. Make sure you use the one they gave you.
  • Your modem has overheated. Move your modem to a location where it gets better air circulation.
  • You are not getting enough power from your power strip or surge protector. Try plugging your modem directly into an outlet.

If nothing else works, you can press the reset button with a paperclip until the lights go out. This will reset your modem to factory default settings.

No light at all

If the power light is not on, check the power cord and make sure it is plugged in. If it is plugged in and you still have no power, there may be no power going through the outlet. If there is no power in the outlet, you have a bigger problem than an internet failure, my friend. I would call an electrician.

DSL, Internet lights and Wi-Fi lights

If your power light turns green, the other lights on your modem box should also start to light green. Here’s a quick checklist of everything you need to make sure all of the other lights turn green as well:

  • For the DSL light, you want to make sure you have an Ethernet cord plugged into your box. If an Ethernet cord is plugged in and the port still does not turn green, you should try a new Ethernet cord.
  • The Internet icon will turn solid green once your modem connects to the Internet. If this icon is flashing red or amber, it’s either because your login information is incorrect or because the internet is down in your area. It would be a good time to get in touch with technical support.
  • Your Wi-Fi light will be off if you haven’t turned it on. Here’s how to configure your CenturyLink Wi-Fi:
    • Open a web browser and navigate to
    • Select Wireless Setup.
    • Select Basic settings.
    • Select Enable next to Wireless Radio.
    • Select Apply to save the changes.

In short, if everything is plugged in correctly on your modem and the internet is not down in your area, your internet connection should work reliably.
