A statistician it’s a statistical: an individual who specializes in statistics. Statistics, meanwhile, is the mathematics area that works with groups of figures and is based on the probability calculation to do inferences. Statisticians, in short, are experts on these issues. They can get the numerical data through polls, research and other methodologies and then study them to generate useful insights and conclusions.
The first task of the statistician is to data collection. These numbers are the raw material that helps you develop an analysis and thus arrive at a conclusion, linked to the behavior and properties of the digits.
The notion of statistician, on the other hand, can be used with reference to the variable that allows the definition of a statistical distribution. The statistician is also a class of mathematical function that, based on certain data, makes it possible to reach a real number as a conclusion according to the estimation of parameters.
It is necessary to briefly explain the meaning of statistical variable before continuing. It is a characteristic that sometimes fluctuates and that varies with the possibility of adopting different values. The latter can be observed or measured, depending on the needs. For a variable to acquire a value, it must be related to others, that is, it must be included in a hypothesis or a theory, at which point they are called hypothetical constructions or constructs.
The collection of data corresponding to the characteristics of all the values or individuals investigated is called population. Of that population you get a sample: a representative part that is selected for study.
Returning to the idea of the statistician, it is a descriptive measure that is inherent to the sample. The statistician is often used to estimate the parameter, which is the descriptive measure inherent to the population as a whole. All these concepts are used by statistics professionals when developing their work.
Expanding the concept of parameter in the framework of statistics, it is a number in which a large volume of data that can be derived from observing the variables, defined above. An arithmetic formula is generally used to calculate the parameter, which is obtained from the population data. Since the main objective of statistics is to model reality, the parameter inevitably arises.
We can recognize more than one type of statistician, some of which we will review below. We can start with the central tendency, also know as position. It is used to describe the position in which a frequency distribution is found around a value of the variable that is being studied. It is normal that they are located in the center, and hence one of their names (“central”).
On the other hand we have the variability statistician or dispersion, which occurs when there are different distributions but with equal values for several of its central tendency statistics.
