• I totally understand the type of problem you’re trying to solve. I’ve been working with it, but I cannot come up with a solution. Could you check through your comments and make sure you haven’t made a typo anywhere?

  [edit]: Here’s my reasoning for why I think there’s a typo / no solution:

  Looking at the first row, you have * / __ = 15

  Let’s call those blanks letters: x * y / z = 15

  Since the last step (z) is to divide, let’s look at some examples of what z could be

  1 .. 15/1 = 15

  2 .. 30/2 = 15

  3 .. 45/3 = 15

  4 .. 60/4 = 15

  Before continuing, let’s look at 60 / 4 = 15

  We would need two numbers to multiply together to get 60.

  60 is formed by multiplying 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 .. therefore, that is not possible with just single digits 1 through 9.

  So, our options for z must be 1, 2, or 3. That means x * y must be 15, 30 or 45.

  To get those multiples you have either 5 3, 5 6, or 5 * 9

  The next step is to look vertically. Both x and y are divided. Since the answers are whole numbers, it stands to reason that the answer to x / ? must be whole, as well as y / ?

  5 can only be divided by 1. same with 3. So that means z = 1 is out

  5 can only be divided by 1. 9 can be divided by 3. However, that situation is when z = 3. Since each must be a unique digit, this solution will not work.

  So that must mean z = 2. That gives us values of 5 and 6 for x and y, although we don’t know the order.

  Looking at the second row, we see – * __ = 24

  Let’s call those blanks a, b and c.

  If x = 5, then 5 / 1 which means a = 1. That makes y = 6, then 6 / 3 which means b = 3. That would give us an equation of 1 – 3 * __ = 24 . That’s a negative value and wouldn’t work.

  Similarly, if the roles are reversed, you get 3 – 1 * __ = 24. The only number to fit there is 12, but that’s not a single digit.

  This is why I feel there is no solution.. or I’ve missed something crucial.
