In order to begin to clarify the meaning of the term vintage we must determine its etymological origin. In this case, we can say that it derives from Latin. Specifically, it comes from “vindemia”, which is the result of the sum of two components of that language:
-The noun “vineyard”, which can be translated as “vineyard”.
-The verb “demere”, which is synonymous with “start” or “remove”.

The process implying harvest and gather grapes receives the name of vintage. The concept also allows to name the period in which these actions are carried out. For example: “This year’s harvest was a success throughout the province thanks to the excellent weather conditions we had in recent months”, “The winery will develop its harvest in the coming weeks”, “Tomorrow a new edition of the Harvest Festival will begin”.

VintageIn general, in the southern hemisphere the harvest takes place between the months of february and april, while in the northern hemisphere it develops between july and october. This can vary, however, according to multiple factors: the type of grape, the particularities of the climate, the degree of ripeness that is desired of the fruit, etc.

When it is intended to elaborate fortified wines, appeals to the late vintage. In this case, the process takes longer than habitual so that the grapes begin to dehydrate on the vine.

It is important to note that the harvest can be carried out mechanically or manually. The vintage manual It is more expensive and slow, although it allows to obtain better quality products since each bunch is selected selectively.

In the same way, we cannot forget other types of vintage, among which the following stand out:
-Scalar harvest, which determines the harvest that is carried out successively.
-Mechanical vintage. As its name suggests, it is the harvesting of grapes that is carried out using mechanized instruments and tools. Specifically, it is committed to making use of grape harvesters, which are machines with the appearance of a tunnel that are responsible for shaking what are the feet of the vines.

The second type of vintage on display, mechanical, has become a matter of debate for farmers. And there are those who defend it at all costs, but there are also many who reject it in favor of the manual.
Specifically, the arguments that are used in favor of both are the following:
-The mechanics are much faster and cheaper, since the machinery speeds up the tasks and avoids having to rely on a lot of labor.
-The manual, for its part, assumes that the grapes are selected more exhaustively, that they are obtained with care and that translates into higher quality wines.

Since ancient times, the grape harvest is usually a symbol of joy since it represents the culmination of the harvest. That is why in many regions they organize events that allow to celebrate the harvest.

In the Province Argentina from Mendoza, to cite one case, the Wine harvest Festival, whose first edition took place in 1936.
