The prefix trans- refers to what is located or develops “via” or “at the other side of”. The notion of gender, meanwhile, has several uses: in this case we are interested in its meaning as the set of people of each sex, taking into account the sociocultural identification beyond the strictly biological.
The concept of transgender, in this framework, is used to name the individual who possesses a gender identity other than the sex assigned at birth. This means that the term refers to someone who does not identify with the assignment based on their phenotype sexual.
Many times the idea is linked to rejection of the binary conception of gender identity (woman / man). The subject that transcends this binarism is considered transgender since they are not pigeonholed into the roles that are traditionally attributed to femininity and masculinity.
Someone transgender, in short, expresses a disagreement with traditional genders. It is important to note that there is no single kind transgender identity, but multiple.
A transvestite, a transsexual, a pangenus and a androgynous, to mention a few possibilities, they are transgender. As a collective, transgender people are usually grouped together with lesbians, gays Y bisexual, giving rise to the acronym Lgbt: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.
Despite this, the transgender condition does not respond to sexual orientation. This is why a transgender can be Heterosexual.
It is important to mention that, despite the advances in recent years, transgender human beings are often victims of attacks and discrimination. It is known as transphobia to the rejection of trans people.
