The first thing we are going to do before entering to establish the meaning of the term pathogenesis is to determine its etymological origin. In this sense, we have to state that it derives from Greek, since it is made up of three elements of that language:
-The noun “pathos”, which can be translated as “disease”.
-The name “genesis”, which is synonymous with “origin” or “birth”.
-The suffix “-ia”, which is used to indicate “action”.

In this way, starting from said etymological origin, we find the fact that it means “study of the origin and development of a disease.

Pathogeny is a branch of the pathology dedicated to analyzing the origin of a morbid state. Its purpose is to study the events that are triggered from the action of an etiological factor and that reach the manifestation of the disease.

PathogenyAlso known as nosogenesis, pathogenesis investigates the emergence and development of conditions. Thanks to the pathogenesis, it is possible to know the etiology of discomfort (that is, its origin) and understand why the discomfort occurs symptom evidenced by the patient. The pathogenesis is complemented by pathophysiology, specifically oriented to the way the organism works when developing the disorder of Health.

What the pathogenesis does, in short, is to study the process that leads certain morbid-type factors to exert an influence on the body of a person, causing what we know as disease. To address the pathogenesis, it is possible to focus on the functional section (the pathophysiology) or in morphological issues (the pathology in its most general sense).

This also leads us, therefore, to refer to what is known as a pathogenic microorganism. This can be defined as one that has the ability not only to enter the host (person, animal …) but also to avoid or destroy its defenses. Not forgetting either that later that will allow it to multiply and to definitively take “possession” and settle in the aforementioned host.

It is important to highlight that each disease has its own pathogenesis. Psoriasis, tuberculosis, Diverticulosis and syphilis, to cite just a few examples, are disorders that are triggered by different reasons, which can be studied according to their pathogenesis.

Thus, for example, we find that there is the pathogenesis of rabies, arthritis or Ebola, as well as other diseases. In the case, for example, of the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation, we can say that it establishes that this progressive disease can be produced mainly by three types of causes:
-Risk factors, such as diabetes or hypertension.
-Cardiac causes, such as heart attacks or insufficiencies of various kinds.
-Non-cardiac causes, such as alcohol consumption, apnea or thyroid function problems.

Diseases that affect animals and that they are investigated and treated by veterinarians also have their pathogenesis. In the case of vet, the notion has the same scope as in medicine, linked to the origin and development of the disorder.
