With origin in the Latin word itinerarĭus, the concept of itinerary allows you to refer to the heading, orientation and description of a certain route, route or road, which includes the inclusion of appointments to the sites, breaks and accidents that may appear during the journey. It is also known as the itinerary to the route that is chosen in order to arrive at a certain destination or the list of data referring to a trip.
To give some examples: “Let me analyze the itinerary: I need to know how far our next stop is”, “The itinerary of the excursion will take us to four locations: Mar de Ajó, Las Toninas, Villa Gesell and Mar del Plata”, “We would have to organize a specific itinerary to make the most of our vacation time”, “Horacio designed the itinerary in a hurry and because of him we did not know the most important monuments of the region during our stay”.
It should be noted that this word began to be used in the Ancient Rome to identify a road map. The Tabula Peutingeriana, for example, it is an itinerary that shows a network of roads in the Roman empire. One of its copies can be seen in the Austrian National Museum, on Vienna.
Roman itineraries include lists of cities and cite the distances that exist on a road. The Antonino’s itinerary, drawn up in the 3rd century, is another example of an itinerary.
In ancient times, itineraries also served as guides for tourists. In this sense, one cannot fail to remember the existence of itineraries that describe pilgrimages to Holy Land.
In this sense, for example, we cannot overlook one of the most important pilgrimage routes in the world. We are referring to the Camino de Santiago, which runs through the north of Spain and whose destination is to reach the city of Santiago de Compostela where honors and veneration are paid to what are the relics of the Apostle Santiago el Mayor.
This route is classified as a World Heritage Site and annually receives a multitude of pilgrims from very different parts of the world who, for reasons of faith or simply for cultural interest, decide to undertake it. Before starting this tour, it is inevitable that you plan your itinerary and decide the number of kilometers you are going to do daily, the towns where you are going to stop to rest or the monuments that you must visit during the tour.
In the cinematographic field, in addition, we find a film that also uses the word at hand. It’s about the film Villa: Itinerary of a passion. In 2011 was when, under the direction of Rafael Montero, this production was released in which it is told how Pancho Villa is assassinated. His body is guarded by four women, very relevant in the life of the deceased, who from his death will begin to tell episodes of the existence of the one who will confront them.
In addition to all the above we have to point out that, although it is not widely used, the term itinerary that we now analyze has another meaning. Specifically, it is used in the maritime field to define the course, the path, that the ships are going to follow at a given time.
In the military field, an itinerary constitutes a departure that is advanced to organize the accommodation of the troop that is on the way.
