In the first place, we are going to discover the etymological origin of the word frugivore that we are now dealing with. In this case, we can emphasize that it derives from Latin, it is exactly the result of the sum of two lexical components of that language:
-The word “frux, frugis”, which can be translated as “fruit”.
-The term “vorus”, which means “the one who feeds” and which emanates from the verb “vorare”, which is synonymous with “devour”.
The term frugivore refers to the animal whose diet is based on the fruit consumption (the product of certain trees and plants, which contains the seeds). It is estimated that about 20% of mammalian animals eat fruits.
Since fruits are the essence of the frugivorous diet, frugivores depend on the availability of this vegetable product for their subsistence and developing. In certain regions, frugivorism is seasonal, since at certain times of the year there is a shortage of fruits.
Frugivores and fruit plants establish a relationship of mutualism: both derive benefits from biological interaction. While animals feed on the fruits of plants, they manage to spread thanks to the endozoocoria, which is produced when the animal eats the fruit, the seeds pass into its intestinal tract and are then defecated. Therefore, there was a concerted evolution or coevolution between the frugivores and the plants that bear fruit.
The toucan, the Bornean orangutan and the pacú are some frugivorous animals: that is, they satisfy a high percentage of their nutritional needs through consumption of fruits.
In the case of the human being, frugivorism is part of the vegan diets (excluding components of animal origin). Fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables that are classified botanically as fruits (cucumber, tomato, etc.) and seeds they constitute their diet.
More and more people want to be frugivores, leaving aside what are meat and fish. In that case, they will have to follow a series of guidelines to adapt their diet to this new diet such as: buy organic fruits, make the change gradually, add water and natural juices to their diet, take different varieties of fruits, wash the fruits very well to eliminate the remains of fertilizers that they may have and eat every two or three hours.
It is important to bear in mind that a frugivorous human being ingests a very limited amount of vitamins, calories and protein, for which you can suffer vascular problems, neurological disorders, bone loss and other damage to your health.
In addition to what is indicated, we cannot ignore another series of data about following a frugivorous diet:
-It should not be followed neither by pregnant women nor by women who are in the lactation phase. In the same way, doctors do not recommend that children follow it, since their bodies need all kinds of nutrients in order to grow healthy and strong.
-There are many people who, by following this diet, suffer a significant loss of weight that can lead to serious health problems.
-It is not recommended for those who have diabetes.
