The concept of consonance derives from latin consonant and it has multiple uses. In the field of music, the consonance aims to highlight the quality of the sounds that, when appreciated simultaneously, generate a nice effect.

ConsonanceIt should be noted that it is possible to establish an opposition between consonance and dissonance. Musical intervals with consonance have a less tense effect than those where there is dissonance. It is important to bear in mind that consonance is a subjective concept that usually varies with the passage of the weather, since it is associated with certain styles and rules that are followed in the composition of music.

The intervals of just 8th, perfect 5th, perfect 4th, major 3rd, minor 3rd, major 6th and minor 6th, as well as the compound intervals that emerge from the previous ones, are usually considered as consonances nowadays.

When we talk about dissonance, what we do is refer more specifically to all that set of sounds that a person’s ear perceives with a certain tension. This fact is what leads to the rejection of these sounds. Among the most well-known dissonances are the intervals of a major second, minor seventh, minor second, or diminished fifth.

This differentiation of sounds, the delimitation of consonance and dissonance, it is important to underline that the experts in music define it as evolutionary. And it is that the passage of centuries and years has led to the evolution of music and this has resulted in a palpable transformation when composing and also listening to sounds.

With this evolution, therefore, what has occurred is a palpable change in their perception. In this way, today we can take as sounds proper to consonance those that in other times were surely qualified or framed within the scope of dissonance. The Music Theory is in charge of studying all this.

It is known as suggested consonance, on the other hand, to the procedure that a composer develops so that dissonances lose their tense condition and are accepted for their harmonic sound.

Beyond music, consonance is often linked to sound identity according to the ending of two words from the vowel that bears the accent and the unmotivated use of consonant voices that are very close.

This would also give rise to the existence of what is known as assonance rhyme and consonant rhyme. The first of those mentioned takes place when all the vowels coincide but there is at least one consonant that does not agree. Meanwhile, in the second case, the rhyme that occurs is that all the phonemes coincide from what is the stressed vowel.

The consonance, on the other hand, is a relationship of accordance that hold certain things to each other. For instance: “The mayor has always developed policies in line with the proposals of the national government”, “I don’t think the singer’s wardrobe is in line with the religious songs that she sings in her performances”, “There is no consonance between what has been said and what is done by some footballers”.
