Assortment is a word which can be used in different ways. As a noun, it can be the act and result of supplying (to make a provision of something, to sprout). For instance: “I like this store because it has a very wide assortment of products”, “The anniversary of the town will be celebrated with an assortment of activities”, “The assortment of material available is immense”.
The concept of assortment, in this way, usually refers to the variety of articles or products available in a commercial establishment. When locating a certain item in a store, or allocating a space for an assortment, there are four main criteria that help to achieve an adequate classification:
* of similarity: Products that share raw materials, that are manufactured following similar procedures, or that are preserved and function in similar ways are grouped together;

On the other hand, there are the following three concepts that serve to measure the assortment: the amplitude, which establishes the number of product families offered by the shop; the depth, the quantity of specific products; the length, the total number of items within a family.
The term can also be used as adjective. In this case, it usually refers to the item that is sold as a unit but that includes different products.
