“Jams” covers many issues: the treatment of helpless, organized marriages, the caste system, and what people will do to preserve their status, as well as an insight into the limited lives of someone who is dependent on others for disability. The strongest theme for me, however, is loneliness. We see the complete isolation of Subha. Because of her inability to speak and communicate with others, she seeks companionship with animals and nature. They understand her quiet language. The only person she thought she understood, Pratap, seems to be blunt about her real needs and wants to abandon her destiny, apparently without remorse. She becomes more isolated and lonely after her marriage when she is removed from her family and familiar environment to a completely new place with a stranger attracted to her parents. At the end, I am left very sad about the fate of Subha, from now on even this potential companion, set her aside for a new wife who can talk.
