The first thing to do to know the meaning of the term vessel is to begin by discovering its etymological origin. In this case, we can say that it is a word that derives from Latin, since it is the result of the sum of these two elements of that language:
-The noun “vasum”, which can be translated as “container”.
-The suffix “-ija”, which is used as a diminutive.
A vessel is a concave element usually used to serve food, either solid or liquid. These parts are also used for decorative and to to stock different types of objects
For example: “When I got to the shelter, they offered me a pot with chickpea soup”, “The young man hid the money in a jar and left the place”, “The aborigines used to collect pearls and then wash them in vessels with water”.
The man manufactures pots for more than 12,000 years, according to what can be inferred according to different archaeological findings. Many ancient peoples who dominated pottery made clay pots or mud. There were also, throughout history, metal pots, stone vessels, ceramic vessels, plastic pots and others.
In general it can be said that a vessel is any container that has the capacity to contain something. There are even improvised vessels or created from elements that were not born as vessels: if a person is in charge of hollowing out a watermelon, you can use the fruit as a pot.
It is interesting to know that there are different types of classifications of vessels, although among the most significant at a historical and artistic level is the one that classifies them as follows:
-Tubular vessel, which has, as its name suggests, tube-shaped.
-Belliform vessel, which has a structure similar to that of an inverted bell. This is so important that it even shaped the so-called bell-shaped vase culture, which developed in the Chalcolithic. Objects of this type that show their value have been found in Great Britain, Hungary and even the Iberian Peninsula. In this, in particular, the most significant have been found in towns such as Carmona or Ciempozuelos.
-The stem vessel known as a bowl, which has its origin in Prehistory.
-The vessel that works as a potty, that is, as a urinal.
It should not be forgotten that, throughout history, there are different civilizations that have used the vessel as a funerary element. This would be the case, for example, in Ancient Greece where it was used as an ossuary or even as a place where the oils that were established as an offering to the deceased were stored.
One of the most famous vessels in the world is the Portland Vessel, a piece that would have been manufactured in the Roman Empire during the 1st century. Made of glass and decorated with a representation of divinities and Humans, this vessel is in exposition at British museum from London.
The Warrior Vessel, on the other hand, is in the National Archaeological Museum from Athens. It was made in the XII century before Christ and shows several soldiers.
