The most famous tomato varieties to grow are heirloom, plum, beefsteak, and cherry tomatoes – which are then divided into two main growth types: determinate (bush) and indeterminate (vine, also called cordon).

If you are a beginner gardener, it is a good idea to grow bush tomatoes, as they do not require much pruning and are the easiest types of tomatoes to maintain as they do not grow but. up to 4 feet tall. Unlike the vine/cordon type, which is trained to grow tall and must be supported by a cane or pole, as well as requiring regular pinning of side shoots to keep the tomatoes growing on the main stem and plant keep. firm
Tomato Flavor
There are generally two types of tomato flavor:
- Balanced – a mixture of sugar and acid, which gives a traditional tomato flavor like Gardener’s Delight.
- Sweet – high in sugar content and low in acid. A good example of this is Sungold.
Don’t rush to get them outside, but give them plenty of space
No greenhouse? No problem. Standard grow lights and a sheltered spot in your home will be fine for starting cherry tomato seeds.
The cherry-tomato season starts in early spring when you start your seeds. I start mine in an unheated greenhouse, where they may grow slowly at first (a plant that grows more slowly at the start will establish faster and is more stable in the garden when transplanted). Fast growth generally means poor growth. If a greenhouse is not an option, start them indoors under grow lights for best germination (photo above). I like to wait until my seedlings are about 4 inches tall before stacking them and transplanting them into the garden. You should not try to get all your plants outside too early in the spring. Wait until two weeks after this last spring, when the soil is warmer and the cool spells are becoming fewer or no longer occur. Tomatoes planted too early will have a hard time growing in cool soil and cool weather, and will succumb to blight later, just when you think you’re about to get a big harvest. I set the transplants into soil that had been amended with composted poultry manure (which is high in nitrogen and phosphorus) several months earlier. Synthetic granular fertilizers do not work as well to give plants a necessary nutrient boost. I plant the seedlings in holes poked through black agricultural plastic (photo below), which works wonders for weed and disease control (the plastic helps control fungal blight spore splashing). Organic mulch doesn’t limit weeds or splash as well as black plastic.
How long does it take for tomatoes to grow from seed?
Tomato seeds can germinate in 5 to 10 days, depending on the circumstances. When you see a green plant from the growing medium, you know the seeds have germinated. After sprouting, tomatoes can be harvested in 65 to 85 days. It is easy and convenient to buy tomato seeds online, at a hardware store, or even at a local dollar store. Six to two months before the last frost date, they can be started indoors.
You will be able to choose the best tomato varieties for your garden if you understand the different types of seeds.
Step 1: How to Plant Cherry Tomatoes
- If you are choosing to grow your cherry tomatoes from seed, you should start seeds within 8-10 weeks before frost last in the seedling. trays.
- Keep them well watered in a sunny location with good air circulation until they are 6-10 inches tall.
- If you plan to buy seedlings, this step does not apply.
- Choose a place in your garden, or put your pot in a place where the cherry tomatoes will get full sun; at least 6-8 hours a day. This is essential to setting your plants up for success, and less than 6 hours will likely result in weaker plants and a lower yield.
