Having achieved “superfood” status, the algae market could reach $44.7 billion by 2023, according to a new report from Fish 2.0, a business competition designed to invest in businesses increase sustainable seafood startups.
This year, there has been a significant increase in the number of algae-focused startups that have applied to participate in the competition, with more than 10 of the 80 startups go through to stage three (of four) of the competition working directly with algae.

With big plans to expand their operations by developing their packaging for wider Japanese market, South Pacific seaweed farming business specialist Mozuku Tonga application to Business Link Pacific for an Adaptation Grant. However, skyrocketing prices and Covid-related supply issues have meant that the packaging project has been temporarily shelved.

- The Kelp Forest Foundation has been selected out of 1,100 applications as the Solder Solder – MIT Global Challenge. The foundation teamed up with ReNature and Kelp Blue to design and implement a system that uses cultured kelp (macrocystis) biostimulants in regenerative agriculture. Prize money – $100k prize money and pro bono, consulting services. “We are delighted to announce ULUU as the winner of the first ever KPMG Nature Positive Challenge,” said Andrew Yates, CEO of KPMG Australia. “ULUU stood out because of its unique application of synthetic biology to solve a huge environmental challenge: plastic. - SPRIN-D announced its choice of C-Cause, a project partnership led by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Carbonwave, GEOMAR and Seafields, as one of five projects selected for their ‘Carbon-to -Value’ challenge. C-Cause (Chemical Carbon Utilization through the Sargassum Economy) seeks to reshape humanity’s raw material carbon supply chain, by converting Atlantic and Caribbean Sargassum into ethanol for plastics. The project aims to develop a proof of concept for open ocean Sargassum water farms, and to optimize ways to convert Sargassum biomass into ethanol for engineering plastics that will store CO2 long term. Dr Mar Fernández-Méndez, Chief Scientific Officer of Seafields says “We are delighted to advance our research into innovative solutions to increase carbon sequestration, which, as well as reducing emissions, is crucial to lowering CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Sargassum has a high carbon sequestration efficiency and a fast growth rate, and as a floating macroalgae does not require mooring lines to grow as Kelp does, making it ideal for scalable CDR-focused aquaculture.” (Read more HERE)

- New treatment targets Lake Anna algae blooms. This week, the Lake Ann Civic Association is nearing the launch of a Cyanobacteria Mitigation pilot program, aimed at killing harmful algae with a hydrogen peroxide-based treatment. The pilot program will use BlueGreen Water Technologies treatment, which the company’s website describes as “cutting edge technologies to selectively target and eliminate harmful cyanobacteria/algae without harming other life forms or any trace chemicals that left in the water.” (Read more HERE ).
